Sat 18. [18 August 1894] Went swimming with Charlotte and Nina at 10. Rather nice swimming bath in the open air with chestnut trees overhanging it. Walked back along woodland paths and dried our hair. Came home and sat on the balcony. After lunch went with the Rosens to Schloss Ambras. They missed the tram and we waited for them half an hour in Innsbr¸ck - it was the Emperor's birthday and the town was full of musicians and holiday makers and Tyrolese soldiers with flying plumes. We stood and marvelled at the Goldnes Dachl and then to the church to see King Alfred - whoever it was cast that statue made the type of chivalry and all manliness. Theodoric too is fine. Joined the Rosens in the tram and went up to Berg Isel. Then we walked up to the Hofer Denkmal through streaming rain - at this spot Hofer defeated the husband of Madame Sans Gene! - it was therefore full of historic interest. The rain stopped and we went on to Schloss Ambras along the valley. I had an interesting talk with Dr Rosen about Persian literature. At this schloss lived Philippine Welse a burgher's daughter who married an Archduke - a little lady with a great aristocratic air to judge by her portrait. She had a nice tall house looking over Innsbr¸ck and the valley with a wide courtyard bounded by outhouses with charming steep roofs. We went all over the rooms which were full of furniture and portraits. Walked home through maize fields. In about 7. Very cold evening.
