Wed 22. [22 August 1894] Last night a year ago I was reading Mother
the Shadow of Death at Kirby Thore and today a year ago the
shadow fell very near me. I thought much last night of him and of all he
had been to me and is still. A peerless day. I went up into the wood
and translated Dard mara. Nina and Charlotte came at 12. Nina
played 2 Chopin Nocturnes - then appeared Dr Rosen and we
organised an expedition to the Lanser Kˆpfe. We all went - Dr Rosen,
Papa, Charlotte and I and Frl Sophie walked. Dull little top. Hugo got
lost and Papa had to go hunting for him. Mother in a great state of
mind which irritated Elsa and me. Tea of delicous milk and cake at
Vill. Nina Charlotte Elsa and I walked home. We went with them to
Schloss Weiherburg and bid them adieu. Merry walk, Nina told us
impayable stories of her mother-in-law. Had some talk with Dr Rosen
about the book. Elsa and I walked back together in the starry twilight
and got in soon after 8. So sorry the Rosens are going.
