Thurs 10. [10 August 1899] Delicious day. Breakfasted with his Ex and F [Florence] at 9. Mr Chirol came and joined us having been sketching since 5! Out photographing with F. Then joined his Ex and Mr C. and went with them to see the Spital and the Jacobskirch where I was glad to see again the exquisite wooden altars by R¸hmenschneider. We lunched and left at 3.20, stopping for 2 hours at Ansfach where we saw the schloss in which Amalia lived and lots of portraits of Frederick the Great and his family, an ugly quaint miniature Versailles. One room was decorated entirely with tiles - from the designs of one of the Margraves I should think. Except some good china there was nothing in it one wd have liked to possess. Left at 7 something and got to Nuremberg [N¸rnberg] at 8. Grand Hotel. Dinner and bed.
