Friday 10. [10 April 1896] After our lesson went to San Sebastiano
and saw the gorgeous Veroneses - what a man! the church is aglow
with him. Mrs G. [Green] lunched with Lady Galloway. I alone at home
very happily with 3 letters from Papa to keep me company. Then to
San Grisostomo where we saw the gorgeous Bellini with the sun on it -
magnificent. The Sebastiana del Piombo also is a very fine picture.
Shopped and took a gondola and rowed out past the mad house to
within sight of San Lazzaro, then turned and came back with all Venice
[Venezia] shining in front of us. As we passed the mad house the
people inside were shrieking. Dined early, met Miss Atkinson and
Miss McNiel who took us in their gondola to the station to meet the
king. Very splendid the canal alight with torches and a great bustle of
gondolas, the figures of the gondoliers standing out against the light.
Lady Galloway and Mr Hogarth came in afterwards, he and I had a
nice talk.
