Wed. 22. [22 April 1896] It poured all day. We lit a big wood fire and
dried ourselves at it after sallying out to the Signorellis. The Duomo
front is a marvel - I don't wonder the painters came to study at it! - but
best of all are the frescos. The Resurrection and the Last Judgement
quite wonderful. The whole chapel is decorated with the naked
human figure, frescos, arabesques, all nothing but naked bodies - it's
a marvel of skill. And presiding above it all Angelico's Holy Divinity
and Benozzo's glory of saints. Left at 5 cold and damp. Got a basket
of food at Chiusi and reached Siena at 9.30. Prompt to bed.
