Thurs 4 [4 May 1899] Unsuccessful expedition through miles of rough
streets to the walls. Did not succeed in seeing the Yeni Kuli.
Shopped after lunch and saw Uncle Tom off at 4 after an agony over
his passport. Papa and I then went to the Suleimanyieh very
magnificent. Prayer going on, lines of people rising and falling by the
Mehrab. Lovely Turbehs in the garden full of blue tiles. Then to
Rustem Pasha Mosque, a vision. Raised on a platform with two rows
of columns in front, the inside covered with wonderful blue tiles. Then
to Shah Zadeh, exquisite court with 2 slender minarets. Turbeh with
blue white yellow and green tiles, quite lovely. Delicious evening.
We dined at the Pera Palace.
