Mon 19. [19 March 1900] Hanna came to see me at 7 and at 9.30 I
started off alone. A lovely day. Rode down to Jericho in company
with many tents and mules and Abu Dis people, with none of whom I
rode a long way. Soon after the Apostles' Well, I met Tarif coming up
to look for me and rode down with him some time. Left him at the Khan
and went on by myself and with the Abu Dis man to Jericho where I
arrived at 1. Kremer [see also Kr‰mer] appeared and sat with me
while I lunched. We then walked out together to see the Mudir who
was out. When we came back Tarif had appeared and Hanna but the
tents wd not come for 2 hours or so. So we walked up to Elisha's
fountain in hot sun and scrambled about over the Spina Christi
hedges. All the field full of yellow daisies and a little white thing.
When we came back it was near 5, the tents had arrived but I decided
to stay. Kremer had shown me his work after lunch - awfully good I
thought. Very modern. A wonderful study for a Christ head, a view of
the Dead Sea [(Yam Hamelah, Bahret Lut)], the slime pits and of the
bathing place, another of shepherds and sheep - some capital black
and white heads. He talked a great deal about picture projects and
most interestingly. When we got in Mudir called and we 3 had tea
together. The Mudir vowed he wd come with me to Ain Musa ['Ain
Musa] and bustled off to prepare for it. Kremer and I walked down
Jordan way and saw the hundreds of Cook tents and gathered scarlet
ranunculus and yellow daisies to send to Nina. We also dined
together so we had quite a merry time! A nice English clergyman with
his wife and daughter. Went to bed at 9. Gorgeous night.
