95 Sloane Street June 28 Dearest Mother. I return M. [Maurice]'s letters. Fabian Ware has been in today and gives a discouraging account of the situation. The French attack cannot be carried through because we are unable, owing to lack of guns and ammunition to support it sufficiently. He says also that the French are appalled at our immense loss of life, which is so much greater than their own owing to the protection their guns afford them. I do not think there is much cause for satisfaction anywhere.
I hope Elsa and her children are none the worse for the journey. My dear love to her. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude
