British Red Cross, 31 St James' Square Aug 25 Dearest Mother. It's very dear of you to suggest coming up, but you mustn't do it. Nobody does any good really; it sounds ungrateful, but it is so. Nothing does any good. This Sunday, however, will be better than others for we are going to do an immense filing job. I have 100 school teachers coming in to help and at least I shall not be lonely!
We can do nothing whatever about the nurse. She must apply to Miss Swift, at 83 Pall Mall. I hear Courtauld Thomson has cabled for 100 nurses so she might have a chance. We have 30,000 casualties at the Dardanelles [Canukkale Bogazi] in the last 3 weeks. I'll send the letter back from him. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude.
