[6 February 1915] Boulogne Jan [sic] 6 Dearest Mother. I was so glad to have your long letter of the 5th, the posts are quite good aren't they. I have been rather unloquacious because I've had a cold and a great deal of work. I'm nearly well now but I think I may probably take a few day's off in about a week's time. Mr Lubbock and Tiger can run the office perfectly for a bit. Only I must stay till I get the new arrangements running - I'll just see how things work out. We had Fabian Ware and Mr Cazalet to dine last night - very interesting they were. I don't care much about F.W. but I do love Mr Cazalet. It's delightful working with him. All the men in our office are too nice and obliging and the whole thing runs on greased wheels as far as we are concerned. But there's an awful lot of work - I told you I begin at 8.15 every morning and we never get away till 7.30. I like it you know, and I'm thankful to have it. It's very very interesting and the more we are at it the more we feel we really can do something in the direction of relieving anxiety. That's always worth while. It's very nice having Percy Lubbock. I'm afraid he won't stay very long, but he is so pleasant and intelligent. An odd fish however. Philip Howell came through the other day on his way back from leave. I met his boat and we all had tea together, and then saw him off. He goes into trenches on the 10th - horrible it is seeing them off to that. The revolt one has, the unspeakable revolt at the waste, the misery of it all. Well - it's no good saying it. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude
