Wed. Dearest Mother. I am writing to you in the train going to Rothenburg [Rothenburg ober der Tauber]. Yesterday when we arrived at Frankfurt what was our joy to find Domnul on the platform! He however, was rather cross, for he had missed his connection at Cologne [Köln] and been at Frankfurt already 2 hours, unable to get on. However, we were glad for it was more amusing having him. We went to our hotel and after washing a little, I went out with Domnul to buy chocolate and left Hugo to sleep. We dined soon after 6 and went afterwards to hear Fidelio very well given in a splendid opera house. We enjoyed it immensely. I met Claud Phillips in the hotel; he also is going to the 3rd cycle.
This morning we left at 7, breakfasted at Würzberg and shall reach Rothenburg at 1.20. It's a charming cool pleasant day and we are passing through such pretty wooded country with delicious old towns. We bummel [sic] along with a lot of changes, but we don't mind at all.
Hugo was rather tired yesterday but he seems very brisk and cheerful today.
Mr Chirol sends you messages. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
